Born and raised along the vibrant and culturally rich Ciudad Juárez–El Paso border, Ms. Alarcón brings a unique bicultural perspective to her role as a dedicated middle school mathematics educator. With nine years of experience teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math at El Paso Independent School District (EPISD), she has cultivated expertise in delivering rigorous and inclusive instruction to diverse student populations, including Special Education, Gifted and Talented, and Bilingual learners. In 2016, Ms. Alarcón earned her Bachelor of Education with a focus on Mathematics from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Early in her teaching career, she recognized persistent learning gaps in mathematics among bilingual students, which inspired her to pursue a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction Planning with an emphasis on Bilingual Mathematics Education, which she completed in 2019.
During the final stages of her master’s program, Ms. Alarcón was appointed as the Mathematics Department Chair. In this leadership role, she uncovered a deeper systemic issue: a disconnect in teacher knowledge regarding the integration of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry in middle school instruction—particularly in contexts involving Special Education, Gifted, and Bilingual students. This revelation led her to transform these challenges into research inquiries. In 2021, she began her doctoral studies in Teaching, Learning, and Culture with a concentration in STEM education. Currently in the final phase of her PhD program, Ms. Alarcón is conducting research and writing her dissertation, which focuses on strengthening pedagogical bridges in mathematics instruction to better serve linguistically and academically diverse learners. Her work continues to be driven by a commitment to equity, access, and academic excellence in mathematics education.
